Hospitals & Emergency Care

  1. Breach Candy Hospital - Next to Breach Candy Club on Bhulabhai Desai Road. Excellent healthcare and facilities but much higher priced than other hospitals. Highly recommend Dr Barman who is a GP there and has many expat patients. There is alsoa good chemist there.

  2. Lilivati Hospital - Bandra Reclamation. Very good healthcare and facilities, higher priced than other hospitals.

  3. Holy Family Hospital - Bandra, Hill Road. One of the Holy Family group of Catholic hospitals, it is about a fifth of the cost of Lilivati. Not as upscale, but the healthcare workers are very warm and always offer a smile.

Emergency Medical Service on Mumbai Pune Expressway - Recently Dr. Narendra Vaidya , a trauma surgeon from Sion hospital has started EMS [emergency medical service] on Mumbai-Pune expressway. This is a joint efforts of MMRDA and Sion Hospital , Mumbai .This emergency care is certified by American College of Surgeons. The service provides well equipped ambulance facility on the expressway for any trauma within 15 minutes.  The emergency contact nos are :  Landline- 9520-27659000 ; Mobile – 9822498224

Malaria

  • I don't know anyone living in Bombay who takes malaria medications. That said, last year 5-6 people I knew got malaria (1-2 were expats) and one got malaria and jaundice at the same time!
  • Often a lot of long term expats will take anti-malaria medication when they first arrive for at least 2 months, but it is not feasible to stay on long term, so your best options are to protect yourself with Odomos (local repellent which is much better than anything you could bring from the west!), mosquito coils and plug ins.

Medications

  • Usually extremely cheap. Look up the scientific/chemical name and write it down for the chemist, as American/European brands are not usually present, but the drugs themselves often are. e.g., pain relief, antibiotics, birth control pills. don't OD on the Viagra though...

Pharmacies and chemists

  • Sony Medical on Ambedkar road (Khar/Bandra - Union Park Area) is open until 10pm.
  • Asian Chemist directly opposite Patel in Bandra is open very late and has a wide variety of necessities. (tell any driver Mehboob studio and they should know it. Ph 022 2640 7709 or 022 2655 0348
  • The pharmacy at Lilavati Hospital (bandra reclamation) is open 24 hrs, and they seem to be well-stocked
